Hardin Unit is continuing the efforts for the 2008 Girls State Program.
This is the 62nd year for KY Girls State, which is a week long interactive
government program for young ladies in the summer following their Junior year in
high school. Hardin Unit has historically sponsored girls from
Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, John Hardin, Central Hardin, North Hardin, and Meade County High
Schools. The registration fee for Girls State has risen this year and
sponsors are being sought. A full sponsorship fee is $150.00, which covers
the cost of the registration with a small portion to help defray the cost of
transportation. Sponsors are welcome for any amount. Please contact Virginia
Hobbs if you are interested in being a 2009 Girls State Contributing Sponsor, or
if you would like more information on Ky. Girls State.
The 2008 Kentucky Girls State program concluded Friday, June 13 with the
graduation ceremony, naming of award recipients, and the
2008 Girls Nation Senators and alternates. Lauren DeLaRosa, Ft. Knox HS, and
Rebekah Kaplin, Central Hardin HS, were named alternates to Girls
Nation. Courtney Cheatwood won the competition for the best city seal.
Registration for the 62nd session of Kentucky Girls State totaled 78; however,
with 75 girls attending. Hardin Unit sponsored 19 girls with 18 attending. In
addition to sponsoring 19 girls, 3 members of Hardin Unit were on staff: Jackie
Cote, Morgan Haynes, and myself. Jackie and I were the supervisors for the
home city of the Governor and Commissioner of Agriculture, who were both
selected for Girls Nation.
Since receipt of the June newsletter, SAL Squadron 113, Judge William S. Cooper
and George Larsen have sponsored participants. We
appreciate all sponsors for the Girls State Program, as it has the potential to
significantly impact the lives of these young ladies.
Plans for the 2009 Girls State program are already underway, with numerous
enhancements projected. The fee for the 2009 Kentucky Girls
State session will increase to $160 and the dates for 2009 will be June 7 – 12,
2009 at the University of the Cumberlands.
