During the early years following World War One and in the day of the
Great Depression, a handful of veterans from Elizabethtown, Kentucky,
applied for and received a temporary charter from the American Legion.
The charter was issued in the late twenties at the Hardin County Court
House , which was the original meeting site of the Hardin Post 113.
In 1946, an old log cabin was purchased by the Legionaries of the Hardin
Post 113 and was utilized as the as the post Headquarters until 1950.
In 1950, a permanent building was constructed and is the present
structure that houses the Post.
Additions were made to the original building in 1967 and 1969. The log
cabin was donated to the Hardin County Tuberculosis Association.
Hardin Post 113 owns and operates a club house facility located one mile
north of Elizabethtown on U.S. 31W, on seven acres of post-owned
property and includes outdoor picnic facilities as well as 7,000 square
foot building. Outdoor facilities includes concrete picnic tables, gas
cooking grills, permanent horseshoe pits, latrines, permanent facilities
for operating picnic booths, and a screened-in charcoal grill
approximately (24ft x 3 ft). The building contains a modern main lounge
(16ft x 30ft), dance floor (82ft x 40 ft) completed kitchen, recreation
room (60ft x 30ft), T.V. lounge (24ft x 30ft), SAL room (24ft x 30ft),
and back then the manager's living quarters and office space. On
November 21, 1983 a fire occurred in the bar section of the legion. The
renovation of that section is what we enjoy and know today as the bar
and lounge. At the present we have 4.8 acres due to transactions made
with adjoining property owners and the States' widening of U.S. 31W.
The living quarters have been changed into more office space.
We
should all be proud that History is in the making again, with the
construction of our new home for American Legion Post 113, located on
Ring Road and is scheduled to be opened in early 2007.
