Unserviceable Flag

Memorial Day and the proper flying of the colors from a flag pole staff.

Memorial Day is just around the corner and we should know the proper way to display our flag.  The last Monday in May is Memorial Day, which falls on the 31st this year.  When the flag is posted or raised at 6am the morning of Memorial Day it should be hoisted briskly to the top of the flagpole for an instant and then lowered to half mass/staff.  It should remain at half mass/staff until noon at which time it is to be raised to full staff and remain there until the flag is taken down in the evening.  If the flag is flown 24 hours a day it should be displayed with the same respect as above, remembering that if flown 24 hours a day the flag should be illuminated properly.

Displaying the Flag on a Float

If you are displaying a flag on a float in a parade it may be displayed anywhere on the float from a staff only.  (Use common sense!!).  However, there is one exception.  The flag may be displayed horizontally or vertically against a wall with the Union (blue field with stars) in the upper right hand corner of the flags own right.  If bunting of blue, white, and red is used on a float, platform or decoration in general the blue should be on top, white in the middle, and red below.
